Police Constable GK: State-wise Important Topics

Police constable exams have a very different GK flavor compared to SSC or Railway exams. The overall difficulty is easier, but there's a twist that catches students off-guard — state-specific GK. Every state police exam dedicates a significant chunk of questions to the state's own history, geography, culture, and personalities. If you only prepare general GK, you'll miss 8-12 easy questions that other candidates will grab. This article covers both the common GK topics and the state-specific strategy you need.

Common GK Topics Across All State Police Exams

Regardless of which state you're appearing for — UP Police, MP Police, Rajasthan Police, Bihar Police, or any other — certain GK topics are universal. Indian Constitution basics are always tested: Fundamental Rights (Articles 14-32), Directive Principles, Preamble, and basic structure. Questions on IPC sections (now BNS sections) are common — especially Section 302 (murder), 376 (rape), 420 (cheating), 144 (prohibitory orders). Basic police procedures like FIR filing, arrest with and without warrant, cognizable vs non-cognizable offenses, and bail provisions appear regularly.

National symbols (national animal, bird, flower, anthem, song), important national and international days, national parks and wildlife sanctuaries, rivers and dams, government welfare schemes (especially those related to women safety, education, and health), and sports achievements of Indian athletes — all of these are standard question sources. Computer basics also appear in most state police papers: full forms of common terms (CPU, RAM, URL, HTTP), basic MS Office knowledge, and internet terminology.

State-Specific GK: The Game Changer

This is where police exams differ from SSC and Railways. Typically 20-30% of the GK section is dedicated to state-specific questions. These cover: your state's history (dynasties that ruled, historical battles, important rulers), geography (rivers flowing through the state, climate, soil, crops, districts), famous personalities (freedom fighters, poets, social reformers from the state), folk arts and festivals (dance forms, music, fairs), and state government schemes and recent developments.

For example, UP Police will ask about Awadh, Lucknow Pact, Kakori Kand, Chandra Shekhar Azad, Birbal Sahni, and UP's districts and rivers. Rajasthan Police will test you on Rajput dynasties, Mewar, Marwar, Rajasthani folk dances like Ghoomar and Kalbelia, and desert geography. MP Police asks about Gond and Bhil tribes, Sanchi Stupa, Khajuraho, and Narmada river basin. Bihar Police covers Magadh, Nalanda, Champaran Satyagraha, and Chhath Puja. The pattern is clear — know your state inside out.

Difficulty Level: Easier But Tricky

Let's be honest — the GK in police exams is generally easier than SSC CGL or RRB NTPC. The questions are more direct, less conceptual, and based on straightforward facts. But don't let that fool you into under-preparing. The competition is fierce because the number of applicants is massive — often 20-30 lakh candidates for a few thousand posts. And the state-specific questions can be surprisingly tricky if you haven't specifically prepared for them. A general GK book won't cover who founded Jaipur or which river passes through Varanasi.

Preparation Strategy: Two-Track Approach

Use a two-track approach. Track 1 is General GK: cover Indian Constitution basics, important Articles (14-32, 352-360), national symbols, government schemes, current affairs of the last 6 months, basic Science from NCERT, and computer fundamentals. This app's general GK notes will handle this track completely. Track 2 is State GK: get your state's GK guide (available in local bookstores or online), study your state's history dynasty by dynasty, memorize district names and their specialties, know all rivers, dams, and national parks in your state, and learn about folk traditions and recent state government initiatives.

Dedicate 60% of your GK time to general topics and 40% to state-specific topics. Many students do the opposite or ignore state GK entirely — don't make that mistake. The state-specific questions are often the easiest on the paper if you've prepared, and the hardest if you haven't.
