  • Direction:(1-10) In the given question, a sentence is divided into five parts out of which the last part is correct. Out of the remaining four, there are errors in three parts. Choose the part which does not have an error. If all the four parts are correct, mark E i.e., All are correct as the answer.

    1. Question

The murder charges for (A)/ Parker carries a minimum sentence (B)/ of 20 years in prison upon convicted, (C)/ and the assault charges a (D)/ minimum of 10 years. (E)

    Ans:4
    Only option D is correct.
A is incorrect. It is because when a person is found guilty the in court and he is punished, the decision is considered to go against him, not for him. In any case when two opposite parties challenge each other, they are against each other. So we must use ‘against’ instead of ‘for’.
B is wrong because ‘charges’ is plural, so ‘carries’ is wrong. It must be ‘carry.’
C is wrong because sentencing is done upon ‘conviction.’ The use of the word ‘convicted’ gives an impression that the said person has already been proved guilty and sentenced.

  • 2. Question

Never look down to test (A)/ the ground before take (B)/ your step; only him who keeps (C)/ his eye fix on the far horizon (D)/ will find his right road.

    Ans:1
    Only option A is correct.
B is wrong because we must use ‘taking’ instead of ‘take’ to make it grammatically correct. Take acts like a noun here which is wrong.
C is wrong because ‘him’ is an objective pronoun that we can’t use with ‘who.’ It must be ‘he’ which is subjective.’
D is wrong because ‘fix’ is incorrect. It should be corrected to ‘fixed.’ Fix is verb whereas ‘fixed’ is an adjective.

  • 3. Question
I swear to you on my honor that (A)/ Napoleon was in such a fix as (B)/ never before and might have (C)/ lost half his army but could (D)/ not have taken Smolensk. (E)
    Ans:5
Every part of this sentence is correct. There is no error.

  • 4. Question

The sounds, that he had not (A)/ heard for so long, had an (B)/ even more pleasuring and exhilarating (C)/ affection on Rostov than the (D)/ previous sounds of firing.

    Ans:2
    Only option B is correct.
A is wrong because it is more appropriate to use ‘which’ instead of that in this situation where ‘he had heard for so long’ is not central theme of the sentence.
C is incorrect because exhilarating is an adjective, not a gerund form of verb. Thus ‘pleasuring’, which is a verb needs to be replaced with the adjective ‘pleasing’.
Affection is entirely a different word. It means ‘fondness or love.’ The correct word here is ‘effect.’

  • 5. Question

In more cases the digestion (A)/ of reserve foods materials (B)/ is affected by the direct action of the (C)/ protoplasm, without the intervention (D)/ of enzymes. (E)

    Ans:4
    Only option D is correct.
A is wrong because ‘more’ is comparative degree. Here we don’t see any comparison happening. It should be many.
B is wrong because ‘foods and materials’ can’t both be plural. Either we only use foods or we must use ‘food materials.’
‘Affected’ and ‘Effected’ are completely different and confusing too. ‘Affected’ means ‘to have an impact on.’ But here the correct word is ‘Effected.’ It means ‘executed, produced, or brought about. So C needs to be corrected too.

  • 6. Question

However inaccessible to us may be the cause (A)/ of the expressing of will in any action, (B)/ our own or another, the first demand of (C)/ reason is the assumption of and search of a cause, (D)/ for without a cause no phenomenon is conceivable. (E)

    Ans:1
    Only option A is correct.
B is wrong because ‘expressing’ is a verb therefore we need not use ‘of’ to describe an action. Like we don’t say ‘I am writing of notes.’ It is simply ‘writing notes.’ So we should use ‘expression instead.’ ‘Expression of will’ is correct because here ‘expression’ is a noun. Like ‘nerves of steel.’
C is incorrect because ‘our own’ shows possession, but ‘another’ doesn’t. It should be corrected to ‘another’s.
D is wrong because, if we are to use ‘of’ after both ‘assumption and search’ we can use it just once. But here we must use ‘of’ only after assumption, and ‘for’ after ‘search’.

  • 7. Question

The next eruption, and the one after it, (A) gave insufficient light to help, (B)/ but then a multiple display hung in the sky (C)/ like a full moon, giving time for his eyes (D)/ to search left and right.

    Ans:5
The sentence is absolutely correct. Neither part has an error.

  • 8. Question

A bunch of government officials in Uttar Pradesh (A)/ Bareilly got together with some agents, bought in tons of urad dal or lentils (B)/ from the local mandi at a price lower then the (C)/ minimum support price (MSP), fudged the records and (D)/ hoped to take home the difference. (E)

    Ans:4
    Only option D is correct.
A is wrong because ‘Bareilly’ is located in Uttar Pradesh. So must show possession by adding an apostrophe to ‘Uttar Pradesh.’
In the second option ‘in’ unnecessarily used before ‘tons.’ Tons means ‘a lot.’ So we just need to use ‘bought tons of.’
‘Then’ and ‘than’ is different. ‘Then’ is used for ‘at that time.’ For comparisons we must use ‘than.’

  • 9. Question

As we move toward that technology driven (A)/ future, it is with a great tragedy (B)/ that the experiences for (C)/ all the people in the past (D)/ are lost to us. (E)

    Ans:1
    Only sentence A is correct.
B is wrong because ‘with’ here is used unnecessarily. With is used when we say ‘accompanied by something.’ Like ‘It is with great tragedy I want to inform you that.’ Here tragedy and inform is linked by ‘with’.
C is wrong because ‘for’ here is wrongly used. It should be replaced by ’of.’
Similarly D is wrong because instead of ‘in the past’ we must use ‘of the past.’ People are not still ‘in the past.’ Past is gone.

  • 10. Question

One member of Mountain Rescue has grabbed him (A)/ under the arms while another unfastened his line, (B)/ but he shook of their ministrations (C)/ while he tried to focus on that activity (D)/ going on around him.

    Ans:2
    Only option B is correct.
A is wrong because we can see that the entire sentence is in simple past tense. ‘Has grabbed’ gives the impression that the event is still going on. It is incorrect. Omit has.
C is wrong because ‘of’ used here is incorrect. The one that should be used here is ‘off.’ It is used with ‘shake.’ Off individually means ‘so as to be removed or separated.’
D is incorrect as when we use ‘this’ or ‘that’, the sentence needs to be very clear about what it is referring to. Here it is not clear what ‘that activity’ is referring to. Hence we must use ‘the.’
Hence only part B is correct.
