Indian Railway

The Maitree Express or Dhaka-Kolkata Express is an International passenger train serving the railway connecting the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka and India’s West Bengal (Paschim Banga) states capital Kolkata. This is the only railway link between the cities of the two nations.

It occasionally runs between New Delhi and Alwar. In 1998 it was listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s oldest steam locomotive in regular service. The Fairy Queen runs on the same route as the Palace on Wheels, the tourist train launched in 1982, and in 1999 was awarded a National Tourism Award.

On 16 April 1853, the Great Indian Peninsula Railway operated the first passenger train in India from Bori Bunder to Thane with 14 carriages and 400 passengers. The train which had three named locomotives, viz., Sindh, Sultan and Sahib, took off and embarked on an hour-and-fifteen-minute journey to Thane.

The National Academy of Indian Railways, Vadodara formerly Railway Staff College is a Centralised Training Institute for Group A and B Officers of Indian Railways, headed by a Director General and manned by an faculty of experienced Railway Managers and Experts.

The railway station situated in the extreme south is Kanyakumari.
