Top140 Simple Interest Questions

41. The simple interest on some amount of money for 2 years is Rs.400. If ‘r’ is 4% more, then the Simple Interest will be Rs.400 more. What is the original amount of money?

Option”D” is correct

SI = Rs. 400, rate = r% and time = 2 year

 As we know,

SI = Prt/100

⇒ 400 = (P × r × 2)/100

Pr = 20,000 — (1)

Again,

Rate = (r + 4) %,

SI = 400 + 400 = Rs. 800

Time = 2 years

SI = Prt/100

800 = [P (r + 4) × 2]/100

Pr + 4P = 800 × 50

From equation (1)

⇒ 20,000 + 4P = 40,000

⇒ 4P = 40,000 – 20,000 = 20,000

⇒ p = 20,000/4

⇒ p = 5,000

∴ The original amount of money is 5000.

42. A sum of money doubles itself in 6 years if invested at simple interest. In how much time will it become 8 times?

Option”C” is correct

A sum of money doubles itself in 6 years

⇒ If Principal (P) = 1, then Amount (A) = 2

⇒ SI = A – P = 1,

That is SI = 1 in 6 years     —- (1)

For sum to become 8 times, that is, If P = 1, A = 8

⇒ SI = A – P = 7

From (1)

SI = 1 in 6 years

∴ SI = 7 in 7 × 6 years = 42 years.

43. A sum becomes Rs. 10650 in 5 years. and Rs. 11076 in 6 years. at simple interest. What is the sum?

Option”C” is correct

Using the above formulae, we have

⇒ P = (10650 × 6 – 11076 × 5)

⇒ P = Rs. 8520

∴ Required principal is Rs. 8520

ALTERNATE METHOD

A sum becomes Rs. 10650 in 5 years. and Rs. 11076 in 6 years. at simple interest

Interest of 1 year = 11076 – 10650 = Rs. 426

Interest of 5 year = 426 × 5 = 2130

∴ Required principal = 10650 – 2130 = Rs. 8520

44. A sum of Rs. 10500 becomes Rs. 17745 in 2 years at the rate of compound interest. If the interest is compounded annually, then what will be the rate of interest?

Option”B” is correct

17745 = 10500 × [1 + r/100]2

⇒ 17745/10500 = [1 + r/100]2

⇒ 169/100 = [1 + r/100]2

Taking square root on both sides, we get,

⇒ 13/10 = 1 + r/100
⇒ 13/10 = (100 + r)/100
⇒ 13 = (100 + r)/10
⇒ 130 = 100 + r
⇒ r = 130 –100
⇒ r = 30

∴ Rate = 0.30 × 100 = 30%

45. Find the simple interest on Rs. 10,000 at 5% per annum for 2.5 years.

Option”D” is correct

Let the simple interest be Rs. ‘x’

⇒ x = 10000 × 5 × 2.5/100

⇒ x = Rs. 1250

∴ required Simple interest = Rs. 1250

46.What sum of money will amount to 400 in 4 years and 500 in 6 years at simple interest and also find the rate of interest:

Option”A” is correct

Amount in 4 years = 400

Amount in 6 years = 500

Amount increased in 2 years = 500 — 400 ⇒ 100

∵This amount must be increased due to SI.

∴ SI of 2 years = 100

SI of 1 years = 100/2 ⇒ 50

SI for 4 years = 50 × 4 ⇒ 200

∴ Principal = Amount — SI

= 400 —200

= 200

Rate of interest = SI/Principal × 100

= 50/200 × 100

= 25%

47.A person borrows certain amount of money at the rate of 2.5% per month. If he pays Rs. 13110 after 6 months to clear his dues then find the amount of interest paid by the person.

Option”C” is correct

Suppose the sum borrowed be Rs. x

SI = x × 2.5 × 6/100 = 0.15x

A = x + 0.15x = 1.15x

1.15x = 13110

⇒ x = 11400

⇒ Amount of interest = 0.15 × 11400 = Rs. 1710

48. Rs. 1500 is invested into 2 parts such that if 1st part is invested at 10% and 2nd at 7% p.a. at S.I. and total interest earn in 3 yr was Rs. 396; Find 1st part?

Option”A” is correct

Let Principal of 1st part be “x”

Principal of 2nd part = 1500 – x

SI on 1st part = 30x/100

SI on 2nd part = 21(1500 – x)/100 = [21 × 1500/100] – [21 × x/100]

⇒315 – 21x/100

According to question

396 = 30x/100 + 315 – 21x/100

⇒9x/100 = 81

⇒ x = 900

∴ Principal of 1st part = 900

49. A borrowed a sum of Rs. 3000 from his friend B on 31 December 2007 on the condition that he would return the same after one year with simple interest at 15% per annum. However, A gets into a position of returning the sum on 31 august 2008. How much amount had A to return to B?

Option”A” is correct

Time = from 1st January 2008 to 31st august 2008

T = 8 months or 2/3 year

Simple interest = P × R × T/100

SI = [3000 × 15 × (2/3)]/100 = Rs.300

The amount that is to be returned by A = P + SI

⇒ 3000 + 300 = Rs.3300

50. A sum of money at some rate of simple interest amounts to Rs. 2500 in 5 years and Rs. 3500 in 10 years. Find the principal and simple interest of 2 years if the rate of interest is double.

Option”A” is correct

Amounts to Rs. 2500 to 5 years to Rs. 3500 in 10 years

Simple interest for 5 years = 3500 – 2500 = 1000 Rs

Amount = Principal + simple interest of 5 years

2500 = P + 1000

P = 2500 – 1000 = 1500

Simple interest of 5 years = 1000

Simple interest of 1 years = 1000/5 = 200

Simple interest of 2 years = 200 × 2 = 400

Simple interest of 2 years if the rate of interest is double = 400 × 2 = 800

∴ The principal is 1500 and the simple interest for 2 years is 800.
