📋Quick Overview

Bihar has a rich artistic heritage spanning thousands of years. The most globally famous is Madhubani (Mithila) Painting — a UNESCO-recognized folk art form using natural pigments with geometric patterns and mythological themes. Bihar also has unique art forms like Manjusha (Bhagalpur), Sujani embroidery, Sikki craft (Mithila), and Tikuli art (Patna). Folk music forms like Bidesia (created by Bhikhari Thakur) have significant cultural impact.

Madhubani painting received GI (Geographical Indication) tag in 2007. It originated in Madhubani district but is practiced across the Mithila region. These paintings are done on handmade paper, cloth, walls, and floors using natural plant-based dyes. They were initially wall paintings (Kohbar) made during weddings.
