📋Quick Overview

Bihar is one of India's most historically and spiritually significant states. It has 2 UNESCO World Heritage Sites (Mahabodhi Temple at Bodh Gaya, and Nalanda ruins), and is the heartland of Buddhism, Jainism, and ancient Indian civilization. The Buddhist Circuit (Bodh Gaya–Nalanda–Rajgir–Vaishali–Pawapuri) attracts pilgrims and tourists from Japan, Thailand, Sri Lanka, China, Myanmar, and Korea.

Bodh Gaya is the most sacred site in Buddhism — where Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment (Nirvana) under the Bodhi Tree. The Mahabodhi Temple here was declared UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002. The original Bodhi Tree was cut down and regrown from cuttings sent to Sri Lanka (Anuradhapura).
