📋Quick Overview

GDP (Gross Domestic Product) measures the total monetary value of all goods and services produced within India's geographical boundaries in a year. It is the most widely used indicator of economic size and growth. India's GDP in 2024 was approximately $3.7 trillion (5th largest globally). The National Statistical Office (NSO) compiles India's GDP data using 2011-12 as the base year.

India's GDP ranking: Nominal GDP = 5th (after USA, China, Germany, Japan); PPP GDP = 3rd (after China, USA). India is the world's fastest-growing major economy with ~8.2% GDP growth in FY2023-24.

📖GDP Measurement Methods

  • Expenditure Method: GDP = C (Consumption) + I (Investment) + G (Govt spending) + NX (Net exports = Exports − Imports); most commonly used internationally
  • Income Method: GDP = Wages + Profits + Rent + Interest (sum of all factor incomes); also called factor income method
  • Production/Value Added Method: GDP = Sum of value added at each stage of production (avoids double counting); used by India's NSO
  • NSO (National Statistical Office): Compiles India's GDP; formed by merger of CSO (Central Statistical Organisation) + NSSO (National Sample Survey Organisation); under Ministry of Statistics
