India's agriculture sector employs about 46% of the workforce and contributes ~17% to GDP. The government has launched several flagship schemes to double farmers' income, provide crop insurance, ensure MSP, and modernise agricultural markets. PM-KISAN (₹6,000/year income support) has been India's largest direct benefit transfer to farmers since 2018.

PM-KISAN (Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi): ₹6,000/year in 3 installments of ₹2,000 each; launched December 1, 2018 at Gorakhpur, UP by PM Modi; covers all landholding farmers.

📖PM Fasal Bima Yojana — Details

  • Launched: February 18, 2016; replaced NAIS (National Agricultural Insurance Scheme) and MNAIS
  • Premium: Kharif crops — 2%; Rabi crops — 1.5%; Commercial/Horticultural crops — 5%
  • Rest of premium paid by Central + State governments (50:50 for general states, 90:10 for NE states)
  • Covers: Prevented sowing, standing crop loss, post-harvest losses, localised calamities
  • Renamed to PMFBY; made voluntary for farmers from 2020 (earlier mandatory for loanee farmers)
