Bhakti & Sufi

Indian History · भक्ति और सूफी

📋Quick Overview

The Bhakti Movement emphasized personal devotion to God, rejecting caste distinctions and rituals. It began in South India (7th–8th century) with Alvars (Vishnu devotees) and Nayanars (Shiva devotees) and later spread to North India (15th–17th century). The Sufi Movement was the mystical dimension of Islam, focusing on love, tolerance, and devotion to God. Sufi saints came to India with Muslim invaders and established various orders (silsilas). Both movements promoted social harmony, criticized orthodoxy, and used local languages to connect with common people.

Bhakti Movement: South India → North India | Sufi Movement: came with Islam to India from Persia/Arabia
