📋Quick Overview
Jharkhand, meaning 'Land of Forests' (Jhar = forest/bush, Khand = land), became India's 28th state on November 15, 2000 — carved from the southern part of Bihar. The date was deliberately chosen to coincide with the birth anniversary of Birsa Munda, the legendary tribal freedom fighter known as 'Dharti Aaba' (Father of Earth). The demand for a separate tribal state had existed since 1938, and it was finally realised through decades of Jharkhand movement led by Jaipal Singh Munda and others.
