Geography & Plateau

Jharkhand GK · भूगोल और पठार

📋Quick Overview

Jharkhand lies entirely on the Chota Nagpur Plateau, which is part of the ancient Deccan Plateau and one of the oldest geological formations in the world. The plateau rises steeply in the west and slopes gently towards the east and northeast. The highest peak in Jharkhand is Parasnath (1365 m) in Giridih district — a sacred Jain pilgrimage site. The Damodar river, called Jharkhand's 'Sorrow' due to devastating floods, drains westward. The Tilaiya Dam on the Barakar river was India's first multipurpose dam (1953).

Parasnath Hill (1365 m) = highest peak of Jharkhand; sacred Jain pilgrimage; 20 Jain Tirthankaras attained moksha here

Tilaiya Dam (1953) = India's FIRST multipurpose dam; built on Barakar river (tributary of Damodar); Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC)

  • Parasnath Hill (1365 m): Giridih district; also called 'Shikharji' by Jains; 20 of 24 Jain Tirthankaras attained nirvana here; major pilgrimage site for Jains; temple complex on summit
  • DVC (Damodar Valley Corporation): Set up 1948; modelled on Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), USA; first multi-state river valley project in independent India; covers Jharkhand and West Bengal; multiple dams for flood control, irrigation, power
  • Jharkhand waterfalls: Hundru Falls (Subarnarekha river, Ranchi, 98m), Dassam Falls (Kanchi river, Ranchi, 44m), Jonha Falls (Guwā river), Hirni Falls — tourist attractions near Ranchi
  • Ranchi: Capital; called 'Scotland of the East'; situated at 650m altitude; pleasant climate; Ranchi University (1960); birthplace of MS Dhoni (cricket); Tagore Hill (where Tagore used to stay)
