Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj (1630–1680 CE) was the founder of the Maratha Empire and one of the greatest warriors and administrators in Indian history. Born at Shivneri fort near Pune, he established a powerful Hindu kingdom during the era of Mughal dominance. His governance system — featuring the Ashtapradhan (council of 8 ministers), a powerful navy, and a network of 360+ forts — was far ahead of his time. He was coronated at Raigad fort in 1674 with the title 'Chhatrapati'.
