📋Quick Overview

The 73rd Constitutional Amendment Act, 1992 gave constitutional status to Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) and came into effect on April 24, 1993, which is celebrated as National Panchayati Raj Day. It added Part IX (Articles 243 to 243-O) and the 11th Schedule (29 subjects) to the Constitution. The amendment has two parts — mandatory provisions (that all states must follow) and discretionary provisions (that states may choose to adopt). It mandated three-tier PRIs, regular elections, reservation for SC/ST/women, and created State Election Commissions and State Finance Commissions.
